This licence is between you and Slamships Ltd, who makes and publishes Golf: The Journey. It covers the game itself: the version on Steam, the free beta on Steam Playtest, and the iPhone and Android apps once they are released. The website has its own terms of use, and what we do with your information is in the privacy policy. Installing or playing the game means you accept this licence; if you do not, please do not install it.
Your licence to play
When you get the game from Steam, the App Store or Google Play, Slamships Ltd gives you a personal licence to install it and play it for your own, non-commercial enjoyment, on as many devices as that store allows, for as long as you keep to this licence. The game is licensed to you, not sold. We keep every right in it that we do not give you here.
You may record and stream your own play, and put it on video and streaming sites, including channels you earn money from. That is a permission we are happy to give and can withdraw only for a good reason, such as a recording made to pass the game off as someone else’s.
What you may not do
- Copy, publish or share the game itself, or rent, lend, sub-licence or resell it.
- Reverse engineer, decompile or take the game apart, or extract its artwork, sound, text or data to use elsewhere, except where the law gives you that right whatever we say.
- Remove or hide any notice of ownership, or pass the game or anything in it off as your own.
- Use the game, or anything made from it, commercially without asking us first.
- Use it in any way that breaks the law, or that breaks the rules of the store you got it from.
Playing fairly, and the cloud
Golf: The Journey is a single player game. There is no leaderboard shared with other players and no competition against anyone real, so editing your own save or changing how the game runs on your own machine spoils nobody’s game but your own. We will not chase you for it, and equally we cannot support a career that has been altered outside the game, or promise it will still open after an update.
Cloud saves are different, because they are a service we run and everyone shares. So please do not:
- use the cloud save service for anything other than storing your own careers, or upload anything to it that is not a save made by the game;
- attempt to reach another player’s account or saves, or to get at the service other than through the game itself, including with scripts, bots or automated tools;
- flood it, probe it or try to make it fall over, or use it in any way that costs us or other players an unfair share of it;
- share your account, or sell or transfer it.
If someone does any of that we may suspend or close the account and its cloud saves. Where we can, we will tell you first and give you a chance to put it right, and closing an account does not take away the copy of the game you bought.
Accounts and cloud saves
You can play the whole game without an account. The version on a computer has no account at all. In the mobile apps you may choose cloud saves, which means signing in with an email address so your careers can be kept and carried between your own devices. Keep your email account secure, because anyone who can read it can sign in as you. We cannot promise a cloud save will always be there: keep your own copy of anything that matters, as below. You can delete the account and everything in it at any time, in the app or as set out on the delete your account page.
The free beta
Before launch the game is tested on Steam Playtest. It is free, it is by invitation, it runs in small waves, and testers are chosen from the launch list. Access to it is never sold, by us or by anyone else. A beta build is unfinished on purpose: expect things to be missing, to change and to break, and expect to start a fresh career when the full game launches, because beta progress does not carry over. We may change or end the beta, or end your place in it, at any time.
You are welcome to talk about the beta, write about it and record it unless we ask you not to for a particular build. If you send us feedback, an idea or a bug report, we may use it to improve the game without owing you payment or a credit, and without it stopping you using your own idea yourself. We never take ownership of anything else you make.
Buying the game
You buy the game from Steam, the App Store or Google Play, not from us. That store takes the payment, sets the price in your country, and handles refunds under its own published policy. We never see your card or payment details, and we do not run a separate payment or refund system. Your contract for the purchase is with that store as well as this licence, and where the two disagree about the purchase itself, the store’s terms decide it.
Nothing in this licence takes away the rights you have by law as a consumer. In the United Kingdom, digital content must be of satisfactory quality, fit for its purpose and as described, and the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you remedies if it is not. If you bought from a store, ask that store first, because it took the payment.
Your saves
Your careers are yours. They are kept on your own device, and in your cloud save too if you choose one in the mobile apps. Copy them somewhere safe if they matter to you: we take care with how the game saves, and it keeps recovery copies of its own, but nobody can promise a save will survive a failed disk or a lost phone. A save made in a newer version of the game may not open in an older one. The support page says where the files live and how to copy them.
Updates and changes to the game
We may release updates that fix, change, add or remove parts of the game, and the store you bought it from may install them for you. We will not deliberately take away something the game was sold on without a good reason, and where a change is significant we will say so in the update’s notes. Supporting old versions of an operating system is not forever: if a version of the game stops working on a system we no longer support, we will say so rather than leave you guessing.
It is made up
The tours, courses, golfers, clubs, brands, sponsors and events in the game are all invented. No real golfer, tour, course, tournament or brand appears, and any resemblance to a real one is coincidence.
How it is made
Much of the game’s imagery is made with the help of AI tools, and its sound is synthesised.
Age
The game is for players aged 13 and over. Store age ratings are set by each store and may differ; where a store sets a higher age for your country, that age applies.
Ending the licence
You can end this licence whenever you like by uninstalling the game. We may end it if you break it in a way that matters and do not put it right after we have asked, and we will only do so proportionately. If it ends you must stop using the game and remove it from your devices. Ending the licence does not affect a refund you are entitled to from the store, or any right you have by law.
No warranty, and what we are responsible for
Beyond the consumer rights above, the game is provided as it is. We do not promise it will be free of faults or will never stop working, and we do not promise any particular result from playing it.
We are responsible for loss you suffer that is a foreseeable result of our breaking this licence or of our failing to use reasonable care and skill. We are not responsible for loss that was not foreseeable, for loss of a save or of data where you have not kept a copy you reasonably could have kept, or for loss connected with a business, such as lost profit or lost opportunity, because the game is sold for private use. We do not limit or exclude our responsibility for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law does not allow us to limit. Nothing here affects your statutory rights as a consumer.
Changes
We may update this licence; the date at the top says when it last changed, and a change that matters will be flagged in the game or on this page before it takes effect. A change never applies backwards to a purchase you have already made.
